More than 10 large-scale abstract canvases and smaller works of the period will be on view from May 29 through July 16th.

Though these canvases have not been on view for more than 40 years, it is obvious that Abramowitz was clearly ahead of his time. These works from this colorful period of abstraction are fresh, progressive and could easily stand alongside today’s contemporary themes in abstract art. His early colorful abstractions boast broad, layered brushstrokes, thoughtfully and boldly placed.

A prolific artist with a career spanning seven decades, Benjamin Abramowitz (1917 – 2011) devoted a lifetime to art. A master artist in painting, sculpture, and works on paper, Abramowitz began working in New York City. Early talents were evident in his first solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (1936) at the young age of 16

Abramowitz’s work is held in numerous prestigious institutions including the Met, The Phillips Collection, Baltimore Museum of Art, Howard University, Smithsonian Institution.

Join ARCHER for an opening reception on Wednesday May 29, from 6-10 p.m.

SEAN SMITH -
Sean Smith is fine art photographer and self-confessed image hoarder. “I can’t help it, I love pictures-I always have,” says Sean. As a child he used pictures to escape from the reality and, he says, “In many ways, I haven’t changed at all”.

Today, however, Sean uses a variety of techniques, including studio photography, manipulated images, appropriated images, collage and painting to change reality, creating original works that are sometimes beautiful, humorous and challenging. He combines and juxtaposes imagery from an array of visual traditions, including renaissance painting, pornography, snapshots, Web images, fashion advertising, vintage postcards, cookbooks and physique magazines.

As a fan of new technology, social media, and commercial printing, Sean employs technology in novel ways in the presentation of his work.

Sean studied art in Philadelphia and Rome. After receiving a BFA in photography from Tyler School of art in 1988, he worked as an assistant to Bruno Ceccobelli, an acclaimed Italian painter. He has lived and worked in Washington DC since 1993.
